On behalf of the CMBA Board of Directors,
CMBA would like to update our members on the status of the CMBA 2020/2021 season.
The CMBA office and our board members have been in constant contact with Alberta Basketball and Canada Basketball with a “Return to Play” strategy. The CMBA Executive and Board Association Members have been collaborating on these matters as well. Based on these collaborations and discussions, there are two major factors in play that help us with navigating a 2020/2021 season.
CMBA and our associations need access to city gymnasiums. Currently the City of Calgary is not allowing rentals of any of their school gymnasiums. They have set a date that the earliest these gymnasiums will be available to rent is October 13th, 2020. The city does not guarantee they will allow gym rentals on October 13th, they have simply put a “not before” date. This date is subject to change depending on several variables.
Although there are many private schools that are becoming available, there are not enough private facilities to accommodate all our teams.
Currently, Alberta is in Phase 2 when it comes to “Return to Play” protocols. This means that players must be placed in Cohorts of no more than 50 players. This makes it exceedingly difficult to have evaluations for players and to place them properly onto teams. It also makes it difficult for the league to create divisions for league play being restricted to only allowing a maximum of four teams in each Cohort.
CMBA is exploring ways to create teams and small leagues if Alberta remains in Phase 2 but will still need access to gymnasiums to do so.
We still encourage families to register with their association. This helps each association have an idea how many players are going to play. We appreciate your patience while we navigate through all the protocols and changing rules. The health and safety of our members is our top priority.
Thank you,
Calgary Minor Basketball Association
Calgary Minor Basketball Association is exploring all options to start our league again. Before we can explore any
opportunities, two things must occur which include Phase 3 opening and gym availability. When these occur, CMBA
will work diligently to try and get our league back running while always putting the health and safety of our players,
volunteers and families first.
The Alberta government and health services must open up Phase 3 before we can even do evaluations or tryouts.
Currently cohorts of 50 are allowed to play together. If the cohort rule is not lifted, it is impossible to have proper
evaluations. CMBA does not believe we can run a successful league if players and teams have to commit to cohorts. The launch of Phase 3 MAY relax the cohort rule.

Currently the City of Calgary has announced that no gym rentals will take place before October 13. This does not
guarantee that they are, they have just informed us no one will get in before that. All though our associations and
league do a good job getting access to private facilities, there are not enough for our 4500 players to practice during
the week and have games on Saturdays.
If the City of Calgary allows for gym rentals, Phase 3 opens up and the CMBA Board of Directors approves return to
play, below is the new timeline for the 2020/2021 season.

associations may start earlier if they are able to access private facilities and social distance evaluations or offer some
type of training without cohorts.

* A modified schedule will include games on Friday and Saturday
CMBA is aware of the Province of Alberta’s Stage 2 relaunch and is encouraged by these recent AHS health developments towards sport. However CMBA still awaits the Province of Alberta’s announcement of school roll out, now set for August 1st. In the most recent announcement, the Province of Alberta will look at three scenarios for schools reopening and one of those scenarios will be chosen by the Province of Alberta for school start up. The majority of CMBA Zones and CMBA League need school gym rentals to operate, we should have a clearer picture come August 1st of how CMBA should proceed with Fall 2020.

We appreciate the patience of our CMBA families during these challenging times. We are eager to get our Zone members back into gyms and playing basketball; however this will be done in accordance with guidelines established by Alberta Health and as announced by the Chief Medical Officer of Health from in order to protect the health of our players, coaches, and families.
At this time, we are looking to the City of Calgary for direction on when a return to gyms might be expected. We are hoping that the City will confirm this for the CMBA and its member Zones around July 1, 2020.
In the event that we are permitted to return to gyms and offer a fall season of basketball, we are also working with our member Zones on ways to potentially offer early registration so that member Zones can organize their teams as quickly as possible.
We will continue to keep our CMBA member Zones informed of changes to this situation as information becomes available.
Thank you,

Hello Coaches, Club Directors, and Team Managers, Spring League 2020 Update in regards to Coronavirus (COVID-19)
CMBA has been informed by the City of Calgary Recreation Dept that all school rentals have been cancelled at CBE and CSSD schools up until April 30th, 2020 due to Coronavirus (Covid-19) precautions. As per CMBA’s Original email message on Friday, March 13th we have moved to Step 2.
Step 2:
The Season is delayed in its start by two or three weeks, or one month. If the season is delayed league registration fees would be prorated and refunded to teams on the amount of lost games that were not played during the period of delay. Also, Coronavirus (COVID-19) game procedures would be in place for all games.
Further to Step 2 Prorated of team fees would take place at the end of March on March 31st, 2020. Considering a condensed May and June season goes ahead.
Thank you for you patience in this time as we watch and wait on further direction from AHS (Alberta Health Services), The Province of Alberta, and the City of Calgary.
If you have further questions or concerns please email CMBA at cmba@cmba.ab.ca ; with the mass influx of phone calls we are better suited to administer email responses.
Thank you,
Calgary Minor Basketball Association
CMBA is actively monitoring the ongoing public health situation surrounding Coronavirus (COVID-19). We have received many questions from our families, and we want to stress that we understand these concerns, given the significant attention this topic has received in the media. We are committed to help protect the health and safety of the athletes, staff, coaches, and extended families
CMBA does not offer medical advice regarding disease prevention, but we refer our teams to the resources listed at the end of this Advisory regarding Coronavirus.
CMBA is monitoring developments from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and Alberta Health Services (AHS). While both the PHAC and AHS acknowledge that there is a public health concern, both agencies state that the risk for individuals is low. However, given how quickly things can change, CMBA will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as the circumstances require or if CMBA makes changes.
Considering the current situation here are some of the potential steps moving forward into the 2020 Spring Season.
***CMBA will readdress these options on March 30th, 2020*** Update will be provided on March 31st, 2020 via email to all teams and clubs.***
*** Please note teams that with draw will not be charged any service fees, this situation is an extreme circumstance and grace will be given to all teams and clubs in the league when providing refunds. ***
Please keep you and your family safe in these difficult circumstances. If you have further questions or concerns please email CMBA at cmba@cmba.ab.ca ; with the mass influx of phone calls we are better suited to administer email responses.
We remind everyone to continue to take preventative actions advised by public health officials to help stop the spread of germs, including washing hands frequently, for at least 20 seconds, containing coughs into a tissue or sleeve and staying home if you are sick, especially if you have a respiratory illness and fever.
