Policy: Club Recruiting

Club Recruiting

To Coaches, Parents & Players,

On September 21, 2017 the Calgary Minor Basketball Association had their Annual General Meeting.  At that meeting, the topic of “club recruiting” was addressed.  It has come to our attention over the past couple of years, basketball club coaches or club representatives have been attending CMBA games to promote their basketball club and recruit players to join.

CMBA Board of Directors believes that club basketball is a great way to continue to improve your son or daughters basketball skills.  We support any of our CMBA players to continue to find additional ways to play the game.  These methods may include camps, clubs and recreational leagues.

The growing concern we have is we have had several concerns and complaints from parents and coaches that club coaches or club representatives have made players and parents feel uncomfortable with the pressure clubs are putting on these players to join.  In addition, we have been given examples of basketball clubs approaching players as young as 9 years old, asking them to join, the whole time doing it in front of teammates and other parents.  We believe, situations like this put undue stress, not only on the players and parents of the player being recruited, but also the players and parents of the player that isn’t being “recruited”.

Because of this, the CMBA Board of Directors has voted to eliminate recruiting or promoting of basketball clubs directly or in directly through club coaches or club representatives before, during or after a CMBA event on the property of the CMBA rented facilities.

Recruiting includes Club coaches or club representatives approaching CMBA players or parents for the purpose of promoting their clubs during the duration that the CMBA player and their family is on the CMBA event property.

We have sent a copy of this new rule to as many basketball clubs in Calgary as we could.  We ask that both parents and coaches help us in eliminating the recruiting process at CMBA events.  Please contact the CMBA office directly via email at cmba@cmba.ab.ca  if you are approached by any club or club representative for the purpose of promoting their club, sharing information about their club or recruiting your son/daughter to play club while at on CMBA event property.

Thank you,

Calgary Minor Basketball Association
