Questions with U of C Dino's player Mya Proctor:

Q: Who is your favourite basketball player?

A: Kevin Durant because of his versatility.

Q: Which basketball team do you root for?

A: Brooklyn Nets because Durant and Kyrie are playing together now. I became a fan once KD got traded there.

Q: Who has the best basketball uniforms of any college or pro team you like?

A: Lakers (2020/2021 City Edition) or Lakers Black Mamba City Edition Swingman Jersey.

Q: What is your favourite basketball movie?

A: Space Jam because MJ is in it & it’s a classic.

Q: What is your favourite candy?

A: Gummies or Kinder chocolate

Q: What is your favourite ice cream?

A: Haagen-Dazs Caramel Cone Explosion

Q: What is your favourite basketball play?

A: Probably dropping a dime assist because it gets the bench and crowd hyped up and brings players on the floor together.

Q: What do you love most about the game of basketball?

A: The fact that there are so many ways to contribute to the game and there are so many details which you have the ability to get right in every play or every rep, as well as the relationships you get to build with your teammates on and off the floor.

Q: Do you have a favourite memory from when you played in the CMBA?

A: One of the first sessions of Diamond League when we had an entire day of training where we all got to talk to and play with not only each of our own club and school teammates, but also got to know and play with girls we normally only played against.

Q: How did the CMBA Diamond Prep League for High School Girls get you prepared for your Grade 12 basketball season?

A: It gave me an opportunity to just play and have fun, and allowed me to stay game ready for the school season.

Q: What are some playing concepts you learned in the CMBA Diamond Prep League for High School Girls?

A: We were always reminded of themes like optimal spacing and movement.

Q: What is the best piece of advice you received from a coach?

A: "Even if you miss 5 in a row, if it’s the right shot, you’re still shooting the 6th."

Q: What is one piece of advice you would give to younger players?

A: Don’t worry about what other people are doing, just worry about what you’re doing."

Q: What basketball skill is your greatest strength?

A: Finishing and shot blocking.

Q: What was your biggest failure or adversity you have faced in the game, and how did you over come it?

A: Injury. Just have to take it day by day and control what you can control.

Q: Are you a vocal leader on the court or do you lead by example? Or both?

A: More so by example but working on being more vocal.

Q: How do you find positive ways to communicate with your teammates? To build team culture.

A: By trying to be vocal in all different situations, so that my teammates aren’t only hearing me when they do something well or only when they mess up. It is important to tell your teammates when they’re doing a good job and cheer for them, just as it is important to let them know if they are not doing what they’re supposed to be doing or if you have a suggestion for what they can do to be better next time. The team as a whole won’t progress without feedback or constructive criticism, yet no one will want to listen to your feedback if you’re only noticing or telling somewhat what they’re doing wrong or need to improve on. There needs to be both positive reinforcement and constructive criticism.

Q: What is your favourite class or subject in University?

A: Law & Society or Soci where we learn about deviance and crime because it’s super cool to hear about different cases and study human behaviour. I think history is very interesting as it provides understanding on why the world is the way it is today.

Q: What are your plans after you graduate?

A: To get a job that allows me to help people everyday, or gives me the means to be able to help people. Also, to continue to stay active, whether that be continuing to play basketball at a high level or simply finding other ways to stay fit.

Q: How are you training during the Covid-19 pandemic to prepare for the next season?

A: At home workouts and focusing on my health.
